Mobi,
The SEA fighter undersurface schemes were a reflection of UK schemes. In a nutshell:
- from late 1938 to June 11, 1940, the scheme prescribed for fighters was black port wing undersurface, white starboard wing undersurface. (I'm simplifying here a bit) This was absolutely a recognition feature.
- From 11 June 1940, the black/white undersurface scheme was replaced by Sky undersurfaces - the recognition feature turned into a liability in combat
- From 27 November 1940, the port wing undersurface was painted black (concerns about similarity between RAF Sky undersurface and Luftwaffe RLM 65); at the same time, the Sky fuslage band and Sky spinner were added as mandatory recognition features
-
From 22 April 1941, the black port underwing was to be repainted Sky, and thus disappeared.
I suspect (Mark WKBS Haselden may have more info) that with Buffalo deliveries commencing around Spring 1941, the locals thought the port black underwing order was still in force, until someone noticed the 22 April 1941 well into the autumn and said "hey, lads, it's been cancelled".
